Artist Statement:  Dreams are a mystery. They mysteriously reflect life and emotions that often leave one wondering why they dreamt them. These paintings interpret the images and thoughts that occur when I awaken.

I use various styles of painting that I’ve studied such as cubism, impressionism, surrealism, abstractionism, and expressionism — combined with atypical pigments and color theories.

Artist Statement: As an artist who works primarily with collage, I am deeply influenced by the improvisational nature of jazz music. I see parallels between the way jazz musicians approach their craft, constantly experimenting and exploring new territory, and the way I approach my own work in collage.

Just as a jazz musician might take a familiar melody and play with it, adding unexpected notes and rhythms, I take familiar images and materials and recombine them in unexpected ways. The process of cutting, layering, and rearranging these elements is a form of improvisation, as I make decisions on the fly about what works and what doesn't.

Like jazz music, collage has the potential to evoke a wide range of moods and emotions, from the playful and lighthearted to the dark and brooding. Through my work, I aim to capture the spirit of jazz and bring it into the visual realm, creating collages that are vibrant, dynamic, and full of energy.

Lost Portrait 0112

etching     United States

Artist Statement:  People have many different feelings and different thoughts, and many times they have no idea where their feelings or thoughts come from. People get confused, nervous, anxious, frustrated by those minds, and they don't even know where they are going. It is very vague, obscure and subtle, so it is very hard to figure out, and very complicated that human being can hardly understand by themselves.

Lost Portrait series examines the complexities of human emotion and identity through visual researches of countenance, try to find character’s minds, attempting to uncover their innermost feelings and thoughts. It is about the situation of getting lost his/her own identity and nowhere to go. I'd like to capture their deep inside inner mind, and express people's complicated feelings and uncertain worries through their faces. Using charcoal and oil sticks on paper, as well as monoprint and etching techniques.

Dreaming

oil on canvas     United States

Artist Statement:  I am fascinated with the 'human condition' that we are all a part of; more specifically with how each of us experiences and sees ourselves, each other and the world on our collective journey.

As a child I was very sensitive and empathic. I would feel things very deeply and, at times, imagine I knew how those around me felt. My sensitive and creative mind literally felt the weight of humanity - my mind would 'see' all these highs, lows, anxieties, and triumphs overlapping and bleeding into my own personal experiences. At that age I didn't know how to process what I was feeling, but as an adult I work through what I see on my canvas. I paint because I must.

When I look around and see what's happening in the world today it makes my heart break for humanity and it propels me to paint. I feel the pain, sorrow and discontent of so many souls. I hope that people who view my paintings recognize a piece of their own humanity and know they are being seen.
